First swine flu case in MK confirmed

The first case of swine flu in Milton Keynes has been confirmed.

MK News - Swine flu leaflets Health services announced on Friday that a man from Milton Keynes, who recently returned from the United States, has tested positive for swine flu and has mild symptoms.

Dr Diane Gray, deputy director of public health for NHS Milton Keynes, said: "He has been given antivirals and is responding well to treatment in his own home."

Close contacts of the man have been identified and the Health Protection Agency has offered them appropriate treatment and advice.

Dr Gray added: "The local NHS services have in place robust plans to tackle Swine flu. We keep our plans under regular review.

"There are simple steps that everyone can take to help prevent catching colds and flu based on good respiratory and hand hygiene. Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw away used tissues where germs can linger and regularly wash your hands. Remember Catch It, Bin It, Kill It.

"This first case should not cause public alarm in Milton Keynes. We are confident that the actions we have taken are sufficient to minimize the risk to the general public."
