Rugby: big win for MK and Bletchley take derby day honours

Olney 10 Bletchley 24

BLETCHLEYtasted derby day victory over Olney for the third time this season with this away win at their local rivals in the South West 1 East.

The two sides have already met in the league and the county cup and a third Bletchley win was never in doubt after a roaring start made by the visitors.

Olney missed an early penalty which would have put them in front and they then fell behind with six minutes played.

Will Garrett passed to  Dagan Probert after a promising 60-yard break and the ball found its way to George Harman who ran in under the posts.

The second try arrived just after the 20 minute mark thanks to a strong driving maul by Bletchley’s forwards.

Olney’s pack was forced back over the try line and Josh Sprules came up with the ball to claim the score.

A third try followed swiftly after Harman’s clever chip allowed Garrett to go over.

Bletchley were 21-0 up but after losing both Harman and Kev Turnbull to injury, they only added to the scoreboard with a penalty, and Olney grabbed two consolation tries.

The win moved Bletchley up to eighth but Olney remain in trouble at the foot of the table.

Milton Keynes 38 Beaconsfield 7

THERE was a big win for MK who needed victory over top-of-the-table Beaconsfield to keep alive their hopes of promotion.

Having lost to the same opposition earlier in the season it was a daunting task but City responded with their most comprehensive display of the campaign so far.

Darren Broderick took the ball over after a ruck for MK’s first try and Dan Rolfe then broke three tackles before scoring as a commanding 18-0 lead was opened up before the break.

Beaconsfield capitalised on some sloppy play to go over early in the second half, but further MKtries from Kieran McConnell and GavinWhitehead, coupled by a good day with the boot for Phil Powell, completed the win.

MK are fifth in the Southern Counties North.
