Roller derby to invade the city

A HOARD of zombie girls is set to invade the city for a head-to-head battle for survival – and they will all be wearing roller skates while they do it.

But don't reach for your shotgun as the undead are not roaming around causing terror, it's all part of the highly unusual sport of roller derby.

It's a full contact, all female spectacle where the uniform consists of hot pants, fishnets and tattoos, and you won't have seen anything like it.

The city's one and only team, the MK Concrete Cows, are hosting a game called Foul Portents, which has inspried the zombie theme.

It's the first ever public exhibition of roller derby in Milton Keynes and the meet, which also features teams from Northampton, Bedford and Oxford, forms part of the 'End of the World Series'.

Two teams of five take to an oval track and each nominates a scoring player or 'jammer' who gains points for lapping those on the other team.

Team members try to help their own jammer while stopping the opposing one, smashing into each other as they go.

The MK derby takes place on February 4 with a 1.30pm start at Bletchley Leisure Centre.

Tickets are £10 on the door, or £7.50 if you buy them in advance. For more information visit www.facebook.com/mkrollerderby.
