Cool Lions take the Heat

GUILDFORD HEAT 83 MK LIONS 87

A valuable two points were collected by MK Lions as they dealt a blow to Guildford Heat’s fading title challenge.

The Lions buried their poor away form to edge out seventh placed Heat and record their fourth win of the season.

Lions kept their cool to sink seven free throws in the closing minutes, which held off a strong fightback by Guildford.

The hosts had started the game the better side and the signs were ominous for Lions as they trailed 17-7 early on, but Mike New’s men soon found their range and were able to pin the score back to 23-19.

Triples by Yorick Williams and Stefan Gill gave MK their first lead of the match at 25-26 but it was short-lived as Heat put together a 12-5 run to move 37-31 in front.

Lions turned the match around in the third with two strong bursts, the first an 11-1 run followed by seven unanswered points that put them 57-61 up heading in to the final quarter.

The visitors looked safe when Gill scored five points to make it 67-79.

However, a Michael Martin three-point play started an 8-0 Heat burst which got them back to 75-79. From there Lions were able to hang on to their lead and see out the victory.

ON Thursday MK Lions host Mersey Tigers at Winterhill, tip-off 7.30pm, and on Saturday they travel to Worthing Thunder, tip-off 7.30pm.
