Lightning open gap at top

MK Lightning defeated Sheffield Scimitars and Guildford Flames to reopen a safety gap at the top of the English Ice Hockey Premier League.

Lightning had their lead eaten in to after a slip-up last week at Basingstoke Bison but their advantage at the top was restored to five points following a successful weekend.

The victories did not come easy for Lighting and both were only by a single goal margin but the will not matter to Nick Poole’s side as they continue to hunt down the title.

On Saturday Lightning looked comfortable against Sheffield with goals from Monir Kalgoum and Adam Brittle giving the side a two goal cushion.

Yet, with seven minutes Sheffield pulled a goal back to make a nervy end for Lightning.
 
The following day Poole’s team were forced to come from behind on two occasions to be Guildford.

A strike from Matt Towalski and two from Kalgoum were enough to secure Lightning two points.

Lightning’s dates for the EPL Cup finals have been confirmed.

The first-leg will be at Guildford on Wednesday, March 17, face-off 8pm.

The return leg is at MK on Wednesday, March 24, face-off 7.30pm.

■ ON Saturday Lightning host Peterborough Phantoms at Planet Ice, face-off 7pm, and on Sunday they travel to Basingstoke Bison, face-off 5.30pm.
