John Gorman's column: my time at England

THERE’S obviously been a lot of talk about England with Mr Capello leaving.

The obvious choice on everybody’s lips is Harry Redknapp – the fans want him, the media want him and the only people who don’t want him to go will be Tottenham supporters.

It will be a big decision but I’m sure whatever is meant to be will be.

I think Harry would definitely like to get a chance, and he certainly deserves one, nobody would begrudge him it.

When Glenn Hoddle was England manager I was his assistant, although it seems so long ago now it’s like it happened to another person.

It’s a hard job because the media pressure is big and consequently most managers end up losing their jobs because of something that has happened outside of football.

The tabloids have a lot to say and you can’t criticise them as they are doing a job, but sometimes you do wish that they wouldn’t stir things up so much.

People say there is nothing to do in international management, but believe me there is loads.

There was a lot of travelling the world, watching the opposition and watching players.

It’s a good job which I enjoyed, and flying into somewhere and watching a top, top game is a definite perk.

When the tournaments come it is more like club football, but the rest of the time it was all about scouting and preparing.

I was lucky to have the opportunity and I appreciate the chance that I got, although because I’m Scottish I’ve always had some stick about it back home.

I was still in the job even when Glenn left as they didn’t want me to leave, but I wanted to go as I think that you’ve got to be loyal to the people you come with.

We knew from the press coverage that he might lose his job, and the position meant a lot to Glenn. It was a tough time leading up to his departure.

Ian Wright will tell you how good Glenn was tactically and he never gets the credit for that.

He was a great England manager and he wasn’t really given the opportunity to fulfil the job, if he’d had more time I’m sure he would have done.
