To get someone like Alan Smith in is a real coup for the club.
Alex, his agent, is a long-term friend of mine and he called me up to mention a couple of players.
One of them happened to be Alan Smith and I said ‘are you serious?’
He confirmed it and said that Alan had watched us and had been really impressed with the way we had played and that he would like to play in an attacking team like us.
Alex was adamant that Alan wanted to come and enjoy his football.
I told Karl and full credit to him as he acted quickly and said straight away to set up a meeting.
We all met him and he agreed to come, it was as quick as that.
It's tremendous for the club, not just for the now, but maybe for the future to show people the type of player we can attract.
Hopefully we will be able to bring in further big names and players of that quality.
But when we get a good player it does mean that someone will have to be left out of the team which is difficult as we have been doing so well.
You would like to think that the signing will get some more fans into the stadium, especially with the way the team has been playing.
We’ve been very busy in the last days of the transfer window although Karl has been busier than me.
But it’s been good to have Alex Rae back at the club.
Head of recruitment PaulMitchell, who has left for another job at Southampton, became a friend and we wish him well with his new venture.
But we’re delighted to have someone like Alex to take his place in his role of chief scout.
