John Gorman's column: dealing with the winter weather

MK Dons assistant manager John Gorman writes exclusively for MK NEWS every week.

THE hardest thing about the cold weather is training as we’re having to do a lot of it indoors, it’s been very difficult to train anywhere else.

We want to be outdoors and the cold doesn’t bother us at all, it’s just a case of the pitch being too hard.

When I used to play the game would usually go on regardless, and it was good to see some of the games on TV where there was snow, it always made the match more exciting.

I remember playing at Carlisle in thick snow when you’d roll the ball and it would be like a big snowball getting bigger and bigger.

For some reason they never put games off, they would just keep re-doing the lines and play with an orange ball.

I think things have changed now though and you have to move with the times.

Players cost so much money, and they would have still cost money back then, but there isn’t the health and safety there is now.

At Huddersfield on Saturday the pitch was in great condition, which was a bit of a surprise given the cold weather.

I don’t feel the cold on the touchline, as I’m used to it by now, but the coach journey back after the game was a long one.

We were just happy to get back in that weather, the journey took about four or five hours.

It was a good performance in the end but in the first half we were our own worst enemy.

There were individual errors which gave them chances, and they’re a good team.

I thought we were a bit unlucky to lose a goal on half-time, it would have been nice to go in at 0-0.

And you can say what you like about Stephen’s free-kick but I thought we deserved our equaliser.

We were really pleased with new right-back James Tavernier, he had an outstanding first game for somebody who had just joined us.

After losing someone like Adam Smith, to replace him with someone very similar is excellent.

Next up are Bury who are a tough team currently in a good, comfortable position in the league.

It was a hard game up there, but we need the three points and that will be the aim.
