Last week Alex Rae left the club to become Paul Ince’s assistant manager at Notts County.
We understand these things happen so you’ve got to take that in your stride.
Obviously, we wish Alex the best.
I phoned him last Friday to wish him well because we all got on really well and we will miss him.
I think when Paul was announced as the new boss at Meadow Lane it was to be expected that he would come back for Alex.
So a lot of things happened before we went to Tranmere Rovers, but I don’t think that is an excuse for what happened in the match.
The motivation was perfect before the game.
Everything was in place, there was a great spirit and we thought this was the game where we’d turn around our fortunes.
The Gaffer sorted it out so we trained at Liverpool’s training ground and it was great to see Kenny Dalgliish again.
The scoreline doesn’t really reflect our efforts in the game - Lewis Guy had a great effort, and Peter Leven had two great shots as well.
In fact, if it wasn’t for Jennings their goalkeeper Petter Gulacsi would have been man of the match.
You can’t excuse Gary’s dismissal he lost his head and now we’re punished by losing him for three games.
We kept plugging away and that is the one thing we can take heart from.
It was a game I expected us to win so we dropped three points against a team who, on our day, I think we’re better than.
This weekend we have a little break from the league to start our FA Cup campaign.
The Cup is always special and we know that is going to be a very difficult game as Stevenage are known for giant killing in the past.
I don’t think the FA Cup will ever lose its magic - even at this first round there’s something special about the competition because there’s teams involved who have already worked so hard to get this far.
