Red Bull's Vettel turns 'boy racer'

BY SIMONE CORGAN
Sebastian Vettel brought a taste of Formula One to his fans at the weekend as the Red Bull Racing driver took the team’s show car for a run around his home town of Heppenheim in Germany.

Ahead of the German Grand Prix on Sunday, the tranquil medieval area of Bergstrasse reverberated to the sounds of F1 as Vettel took to the streets in front of more than 120,000 fans.

It was the perfect way for Vettel to bounce back from his disappointment at the British Grand Prix where he went from pole position at Silverstone to finish in seventh place.

The 23-year-old German said: “It was just awesome. I want to thank all the fans for this truly unique and amazing day.

“I always dreamed about a day like this and they were the ones who made this dream come true.”

Countless Vettel banners lined the specially-built one kilometre track as he first took to the streets in a KTM quad bike, stopping to sign autographs along the way.

Then he took to an F1 car and unleashed 750hp on his fans who will be backing him at Hockenheim this weekend.

This season has seen a tit-for-tat running battle between Red Bull Racing and McLaren thus far, with RBR notching up five wins between drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

It is McLaren who currently lead the constructors table though, sitting 29 points clear.

But all eyes will once again be on the Red Bull Racing garage as the Milton Keynes team continue to dismiss reports of a rift between Webber and Vettel.

Webber held ‘clear the air’ talks with the team after the fall out from the British Grand Prix, which he won, where Vettel was given both of the new spec front wings, much to the annoyance of the Aussie.

Speaking last week Webber said: “The team has produced an awesome car and has come a long way in a short space of time. There are more than 500 people at the Red Bull Racing factory at Milton Keynes and I know that each and every one of them share the highs and lows that Sebastian and I experience during the season.

“ I know I have a very good driver as a team-mate and I wouldn’t want it any other way. We share information freely in team meetings and contribute to the development and improvement of our cars.

“Seb and I are not enemies, we’re just two drivers that are pushing hard and want to do the best for ourselves and the team, it’s as simple as that.”
