Crash-happy Vettel is out of contention

Red Bull Racing are in a two horse race for the Formula One championship.

The Milton Keynes-based racing outfit were hoping both their drivers would be challenging for the F1 crown but after Sebastian Vettel’s incident-ridden Belgian Grand Prix it would appear his season is over.

Instead it is left to Mark Webber, who came second in the race, left to battle it out with Sunday’s race winner Lewis Hamilton for the title.

Hamilton’s 182 points sees him lead the championship with Webber on his tail just three points behind.

Vettel, who has converted only two of his seven poles, has 151 points while McLaren’s Jenson Button is in fourth with 147.

Red Bull have spent the year defending their strategy, saying they will treat both drivers equally, but with Vettel now 28 points behind Webber the Australian was asked whether the garage should now switch their attentions to him.

A coy Webber said: “Red Bull have a good trophy cabinet but not one like McLaren’s, so it depends on how hungry we are to try and do that.

“I think it’s too early, at the moment, having said that, but maybe there is a different strategy compared to McLaren. “I’m not sure but it’s still too early at the moment, but not far away, I would say.”

Vettel started in fourth but finished in 15th after crashing in to Button on lap 16 and knocked him out of the race, serving a drive-through penalty and picking up a puncture.

The German said: “What happened, happened and we can’t change it now. Obviously I’m not proud of it, I lost the car going over the bump as I was braking and unfortunately hit Jenson, so he couldn’t continue. I’m sorry for him.

“We’ll have to see what we can do at the next races.”
