A national award has recognised the harmony between cycling and rail travel in the town.

Leighton Buzzard train stationCentral Bedfordshire Council, Leighton-Linslade Town Council and GoCycle were honoured for their work in improving cycle-rail integration at the National Cycle Rail Awards.

Their effforts in the Leighton Buzzard Station Travel Plan, Get on Track, received high praise at a ceremony at the House of Commons on Wednesday.

The judging panel said that the cycling promotion at the station 'put Leighton Buzzard in a league of its own'.

Councillor Tom Nicols, Central Bedfordshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Development, said: “As a nationally recognised award it is such a great achievement for the council and all our partners involved so I’d like to congratulate everyone involved who helped to develop the successful launch of Get on Track. A project such as this demonstrates the council’s commitment in helping to provide a more joined-up approach to sustainable travel, and we really hope the project will make travelling around Leighton Buzzard easier for local people.”

Over the last two years 74 new cycle parking spaces have been installed with 54 new cycle stands being installed.
A new 'cycle hub' also allows commuters to park their bicycle securely, have it repaired or upgraded, catch their train, and then pick their bicycle up in the evening.

Town clerk Pat Kingsnorth said: "Once again the residents of Leighton Buzzard and Linslade are recognised for their forward thinking, partnership work and willingness to travel in a more environmentally sound manner into the 21st century."
