Students literally went the extra mile yesterday to win second prize with their home-made eco car.

Pupils from Leon School and Sports College School, Bletchley took part in the Shell Eco-marathon Youth Challenge at the Rockingham Festival of Science on Thursday.
The team, who had built their car from scratch, competed against 17 other schools from across the UK in the national driving competition where speed is sacrificed for efficiency.

The schools aim to complete the course at the world famous Rockingham Motor Speedway using the least fuel possible whilst maintaining an average speed of 15mph.
The Leon School, who entered two cars in the competition, topped the leader board all day long but missed out on victory by a whisker.
Their vehicle managed an impressive 1,722 miles per gallon - making it nearly 48 times more fuel efficient than a Ford Mondeo.
