Pothole 'blitz' teams to repair roads

PotholeNew pothole blitz teams are repairing roads in a £1.25million campaign to fix the damage caused by the worst winter in thirty years.

Milton Keynes Council is sending 'rapid repair teams' to mend major roads and routes into housing estates in a new approach to cut the time spent repairing potholes.

Cllr Alan Mallyon, cabinet member for transport, said: "This was the worst winter in thirty years for creating potholes with there being a succession of freeze, thaws, freeze, thaws.

"Potholes have literally been appearing as fast as we have been repairing them.

"Nationally it is estimated that more than 1.6million potholes have appeared since Christmas and Milton Keynes is no exception.

"That is why we have tripled the manpower we have made available to repair the potholes and why we are investing so heavily in improving the roads for the  benefit of all the people travelling around Milton Keynes."

In the past small teams of two to three people would repair individual potholes as they appeared at an average cost of £80 for each pothole.

Now larger teams will repair longer stretches of a road more quickly in a blanket approach, at a cost of £20 for each pothole.
The idea is that pothole repairs may not be needed in those areas again for several years.

To kick start the campaign £250,000 is being spent over the next two months on fixing some of the worst potholes on some of Milton Keynes' most used roads.

Highways network manager Ian McGregor added: "We are spending more than £1.25million on repairing potholes, by targeting roads most used by residents and some of the estates worst affected by the winter."

The pothole teams have already repaired stretches of road on the A509 towards Newport Pagnell and on the V3 Fulmer St between H5 Portway & H6 Childs Way.

In the pipeline are repairs to Aylesbury Street and Watling Street, Bletchley; High Street, Olney; Station Road, Newport Pagnell; Aylesbury Street and Church Street, Wolverton; Buckingham Road, Central Milton Keynes; Glovers Lane, Heelands; Old Groveway, Simpson; Pitfield, Kiln Farm; Skeldon Gate, Willen; Water Eaton Road, Bletchley and Waterside, Peartree Bridge.
