Proud residents are displaying a true sense of community spirit with the launch of The Windbreak Project in Netherfield.

The pilot scheme, run by the Netherfield Doers, is taking place this weekend and volunteers from the estate will be cleaning the privacy barriers between houses to create a fresh new look.

MK NEWS revealed Netherfield took the unwanted top spot in a chart of the ‘worst’ places to live in the city but the volunteers do not think this rating is deserved.

Volunteer Simon Jackson said: “Netherfield was Milton Keynes' first development and it should show what Milton Keynes can be instead of reflecting badly on the city.”

The group believes that a tidy up of the estate will help people fall in love with the area once more.

Mr Jackson added: “It’s not just Netherfield residents that can get involved, anyone who has a special connection to Netherfield can join in.”

If the pilot scheme is a success the group will continue to brighten up the estate in the hope it won’t be in the top end of next year’s Social Atlas chart.

People across Milton Keynes are stirring up a new sense of ownership in their communities since the chart was published. As reported in MK NEWS, stickers bearing the motto ‘I love Fishermead’ have started to appear around the area.

Mr Jackson said: “Weston Underwood might be the best place to live in Milton Keynes but not many people can afford to live there, a community should be inclusive and that’s what Netherfield is.”
