A 55-year-old man has today (Friday), been given an indeterminate jail sentence with a minimum of ten years and ten months after being convicted of committing sexual offences against two children.

William Diack, of Wordsworth Road, Maidstone, Kent, was found guilty of three counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault on December 16 following a week-long trial at Amersham Crown Court.

Following the trial he was remanded in custody until today’s sentencing hearing at the same court.

Diack carried out the offences on two children, a boy and a girl, between 1999 and 2009 when he was living in the Central Milton Keynes area.

The boy was aged between 11 and 15-years-old and the girl was aged between five and nine-years-old.

Diack, who after leaving Milton Keynes in 2006 moved to Croydon and then Kent, was arrested at his home in Maidstone on December 9, 2010 and charged on June 6, 2011.

When he was arrested, Diack’s computer was seized and he was found to have more than 200 indecent images of children ranging from levels one to five, five being the most serious type.

Diack was charged with ten counts of making indecent images of children. These charges will lie on file.

DC Kim McHugh, of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) based in Bletchley, said: “Diack carried out a series of horrific sexual offences on his two young victims and, as many offenders like him do, he encouraged them to keep the abuse secret.

“Four of the charges Diack has been convicted of were not individual offences. Each represented a course of conduct over several years.

“This abuse carried on over a number of years and had a devastating effect on the lives of the victims. I would like to pay tribute to them for having the courage to speak about their horrendous experiences and support the police investigation, which has resulted in Diack receiving the sentence he has today.

“I hope other victims of sexual abuse, past or present, will use the outcome of this case to find the strength to come forward, as we take allegations extremely seriously and always carry out a full and thorough investigation.”
