SIR - I have emailed my preference to the council, and I am looking for a totally independent person to act on the behalf of the electorate.

What has really concerned me over the years since the change to the unitary system is that, when you have political party that in your opinion is very incompetent, it takes years to get them out of office.

The original method adopted by the parties - 1/3 up for election each year - is very undemocratic, and leads to complacency and then to incompetence.

What I would like is that every five years the whole council is up for election, that way the party concerned knows that if they are not performing to their manifesto, then they will be voted out.

THAT is democracy - it isnt at present!
