After a 40 year wait, the Green Party now has its first Milton Keynes councillor.
Liz Campbell, who resigned from the Labour group last spring and has sat on the council as an independent councillor ever since, announced this week she is to become the authority’s first Green representative. She now hopes she will be the first of many Green councillors in the city.
“The Green Party is not just about the environment. I have always strongly supported social justice and believe that we should save services, not cut them,” she said.
“Unlike the traditional parties, who all share a privatisation and cuts agenda, the Green Party is willing to stand up for ordinary local people, and I’m happy to stand with them.”
Cllr Campbell has represented Bletchley on Milton Keynes Council since 2000. She has campaigned on issues like replacing windows in council homes and she proposed the motion opposing Salden Chase, which became Milton Keynes Council policy.
Leader of the Green Party, MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas, said: “It’s great news that the Greens are now represented for the first time on the council in Milton Keynes. Liz Campbell has a strong record as a campaigning local councillor and I’m delighted she has joined us. Greens on councils up and down the country are already making a real difference to local communities.”
In the elections the Green Party celebrated an increased vote share across the city compared with its record result in 2010.
