Ex-Mr Britain buried

BY ROB GIBSON
Mourners have paid their last respects to a world-famous bodybuilder who was once named Mr Britain.

Adrian Heryet, from Windmill Hill Drive, Bletchley, was buried at a funeral service in Worthing on Friday after battling with liver and lung cancer.

Mr Britain: Adrian Heryet in 1964The grandfather-of-eight died peacefully in his sleep on August 5 at Willen Hospice, aged 70.

Adrian was an inspirational bodybuilder, who was crowned Mr Britain in 1961 and was a runner- up in the Mr Universe contest four years in a row from 1961 to 1964.

He moved to Bletchley 30 years ago, where he lived with his second wife Pamela Boss, and retired aged 65.

Pamela, 49, said: "He was a great father and family man. He was quite a character.

"He was passionate about words and loved to write."

Adrian even wrote a letter in case of his death, listing achievements including being crowned Mr Europe in 1974 and world record holder on the squat lifting 601 pounds.

Close friend, Jackson Ryan, said: "Adrian Heryet was a giant among men. A gentle giant and a gentleman.

He was a kind, intelligent, well-read man, who had a humorous trait running through him."

Adrian was born in Southampton, moved to Worthing, and began weight training at the age of 20 after working in a gold mine in Canada.

It took him just two years to become Mr Britain and his trainer Derek Manthorpe hailed his transformation as 'incredible' because most people would take ten years to achieve a similar physique.

At the end of his career he became a remedial therapist and attracted clients including Omar Sharif, John Cleese and Rex Harrison.
