When I discovered that this restaurant serves Indian, Chinese and Thai dishes I knew it had already scored points with me and my partner.

While new restaurants and bars at the Hub continue to draw the crowds, the nearby Silk Road has something else to offer diners.

The manager tells me it is the only restaurant to offer all three of the Eastern favourites.

When I opened the menu I realised I was going to struggle to choose between the countries.

At least the oriental sharing platter (£8.95) pleased us both for starters, with crispy spring rolls, sesame toast, delicious BBQ wings, seaweeds and juicy chicken satay.

Thanks to its location slightly out of town, the restaurant has enough space so that you are not shoulder to shoulder with the guests at the next table.

Silk Road oozes intimacy without making you feel suffocated, accentuated as we were seated in a candle lit alcove.

There is a generous waiting area and bar at the entrance and plenty of waiters are on duty this Friday night.

My partner opted for a Thai yellow curry with king prawns (£8.95) and egg fried rice (£2.95).

I was torn between a lamb shank massaman - one of the specialities from the 'fusion' list - or a classic Indian dish.

I eventually decided I was in the mood for an Indian curry and plumped for the Murgh Makhni (£8.95), with Kesar Palif rice (£2.25).

Mine was a tangy number with large slices of tandoor grilled tikka of chicken simmered in a satin smooth massala-type sauce.

The Thai yellow curry included plenty of king prawns and crispy vegetables.

A very fresh peshwari naan (£1.95) helped to mop up the sauce and we washed it all down with Indian and Mexican beer (small Kingfisher - £2.50, Corona - £2.75).

The dessert menu looked surprisingly decent but my stomach was full and our smiles told the manager his food had more than satisfied.

It is easy to see why business is going well at Silk Road - it really is a restaurant that caters for all tastes. Why argue about whether it's to be Chinese, Indian or Thai when you can have all ways?
