Famous for its hand-made cakes and pastries, Patisserie Valerie has been offering indulgent lunches and snacks in thecentre:mk for six months.

The first branch to be opened outside London, the cafe also provides continental all-day breakfasts and fine teas and coffees.

For the main course I ordered mozzarella cheese, avocado, tomato, and fresh basil pesto dressing on toasted ciabatta (£6.95).

The 'special sandwich' came with a good portion of crisps and salad with a gorgeous dressing.

My guest ordered a smoked salmon salad with artichoke hearts, capers, black olives, with fresh goats' cheese served on mixed-leaf lettuce and lemon dressing (£8.95).

She said: "I never expected such a large portion, but it certainly made the meal good value." For dessert I ordered a chocolate nut sundae 'Kandinski', with seeded vanilla and double chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce and cantuccini biscuits, topped with whipped cream and hazelnuts (£5.25).

It was absolutely huge but the Italian-style ice cream, made by the patisserie, was creamy and delicious.

It would be perfect for sharing.

My guest ordered the obligatory Patisserie Valerie cake, a double chocolate gateau (£3) which, she said, 'did exactly what it said on the tin'.

I also tried their Strawberry Delight Smoothie, with strawberry, peach and papaya (£3.25), which was perfectly refreshing on a hot summers day.

The presentation, portions and quality of the food were all good and the atmosphere pleasantly continental; perfect for grabbing a nice lunch when you are out shopping.
