Indian restaurants can be an easy target for food critics but for the amateur taste tester Cafe Ganges ticks every box.

The surroundings are clean and uncomplicated and an Indian restaurant would not be complete without the piped music to give that 'authentic feel'.

But besides from the usual trappings, this restaurant offers a great taste experience.

The poppadoms and pickles are washed down with the customary bottle of Cobra beer as we check the menu.

It features the usual suspects alongside a good range of seafood dishes and chef's specials, while the wine menu looks reasonable too.

To our right, a table of regular customers order their 'usual' and our waiter tells me they eat here religiously.

Our plan to share three main dishes disappears when the non-vegetarian Hors-d'Oeuvres (£7.95) sizzles into view.

This comprises a selection of tasters including chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, sheesh kebab and a mouth-watering king prawn each.

The owner, a small polite man, suggests the Nawabi Chicken (£9.25) as one of the best dishes around.

Our waiter wheels out the trolley before pouring a generous amount of brandy over the entire pan and setting it on fire.

One feels a certain pride when the other guests turn in terror to see the flames licking the ceiling briefly before dying.

Nawabi Chicken became a favourite at the first mouthful.

Chicken tikka pieces are mixed with plenty of mushrooms and cooked in a thick sauce with fresh herbs and tomatoes.

It is a medium spiced dish that provides a rich and tangy bite.

My partner's Lamb Passanda (£6.25) makes a less flamboyant entrance but treats the taste buds to wonderfully roasted picattas of lamb in a creamy onion, coconut and yoghurt sauce.

Our meal ends with coffee and chocolates to conclude a satisfying Indian experience.
