Synopsis: 3D animation about a monster’s love for a nightclub singer
Who’s in it: Vanessa Paradis, Bob Balaban, Adam Goldberg
THERE are loads of animated films vying for attention these days so anything new is going to have to be fairly good to stand out from the crowd.
A Monster In Paris is predictably an effort from across the channel in France and as is fashionable right now is brought to us in 3D.
When two scientists conduct an unwise experiment which unwittingly creates a seven-foot-tall flea, all hell breaks loose in the French capital.
The giant bug sets itself free among a terrified public but the film doesn’t turn into a classic monster movie - in fact it becomes quite sensitive.
Singer Lucille bumps into the flea and realises he isn’t actually that bad, in fact, he’s fairly gentle and not bad on the guitar.
It’s generally well animated, although the 3D is disappointing in places, and the voice cast is strong.
A Monster in Paris is a nice, heart-warming tale which the kids will clearly love, but we never emotionally connect with the characters and the plot can be sketchy.
The bar has been set extremely high for animation and this just fails to clear the height.
